An organization called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forgreenheat.org\/\">Alliance for Green Heat<\/a> sponsored the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forgreenheat.org\/stovedesign.html\">wood stove decathlon.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The display is gone. But you can read more about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forgreenheat.org\/stovedesign\/finalists.html\">14 finalists, <\/a>from across the U.S., Europe and even New Zealand. The winner for over-all performance &#8211; and affordability &#8211; was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.woodstove.com\/\">Woodstock Soapstone Company<\/a> of West Lebanon, New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/home\/improvement\/energy-efficient\/wood-stove-decathlon-finalist-woodstock-soapstone-16161556\">Popular Mechanics interviewed Woodstock&#8217;s Tom Morrissey<\/a> about the hows and the whys of seeking better efficiency:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Philosophically, the economy has not been kind to millions of people over the last six years. Many people use wood heat because they have to, not because they want to. Often these people use wood as a primary heat source and burn the most wood on a per-capita basis. Anyone who wanted to clean up wood burning would start from the bottom and work their way up.&#8221; <em>(excerpt from longer Q &amp; A)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/20\/science\/earth\/contest-aims-for-a-cleaner-burning-wood-stove.html?src=rechp\">New York Times wrote up the event too<\/a>, as a science article:<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cIt\u2019s a combination of low tech and high tech,\u201d said James B. Meigs, one of the judges. \u201cIt\u2019s a humble area that doesn\u2019t get enough attention.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And there&#8217;s plenty of room for improvement. According the the Times article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\">Wood stoves typically deliver only 40 to 50 percent of the energy potential of the wood in the space they are supposed to heat. Some of the models in the competition deliver more than 90 percent and make the smoke cleaner. In wood stoves, cleanliness and efficiency turn out to be the same thing.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\">\u201cIf you can see it, if you can smell it, that\u2019s energy that isn\u2019t heating your house,\u201d said another judge, Philip K. Hopke, a professor at Clarkson University and the director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarkson.edu\/ise\/\">Institute for a Sustainable Environment<\/a> there. Parts of the smoke that can be smelled or seen are particles and gases that failed to burn, Professor Hopke said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The contest came with a prize of $25,000. In a nice touch, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.woodstove.com\/2013\/11\/wood-stove-design-challenge-award.html\">Morrissey shared the prize with two other entrants<\/a> who&#8217;d participated on a shoestring budget.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it&#8217;s not possible to build wood stoves that are 100% efficient and many of us already have an existing unit that will remain in use for years to come. But it&#8217;s good to know that better models are being developed to extract more heat, reduce pollution and expand choice.
