So often I’m blogging about stories and trends in our region that are disturbing, or sad, or outright criminal. But of course that’s not always the way, particularly around the holidays when people tend to really get their nice on.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, a couple organizations in Potsdam did just that. On Sunday, the Potsdam Food Co-op’s Carriage House Bakery held its annual Holiday Baking Fest and Silent Auction (Watertown Daily Times<\/a>). This is the 16th year the bakery’s held the auction, with proceeds going to the Potsdam Neighborhood Center. The event raised $1,043.<\/p>\n

The Potsdam Humane Society also got a bit of a windfall this weekend with the owners of the Potsdam, Gouverneur and Ogdensburg Save-A-Lot grocery stores passing along donations from shoppers who gave through its “Round Up Your Total for the PHS Animals” drive in October. Jeff and Melissa Proulx presented the Humane Society with a check for $3,000. That story and an adorable picture from North Country Now<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These are only a couple examples from today’s papers — there are a huge number of opportunities to volunteer or give, particularly at this time of year, and so many instances of people giving big, and publicly, it’s fabulous. Just thought I’d put that bit of unmitigated nice out there.<\/p>\n
