{"id":1445,"date":"2009-12-28T23:01:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-29T03:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/12\/28\/one-hopeful-thing-about-the-christmas-bomber\/"},"modified":"2009-12-28T23:01:00","modified_gmt":"2009-12-29T03:01:00","slug":"one-hopeful-thing-about-the-christmas-bomber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/12\/28\/one-hopeful-thing-about-the-christmas-bomber\/","title":{"rendered":"One hopeful thing about the Christmas bomber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Word that a terrorist very nearly destroyed an American airliner over Detroit on Christmas day has rightly revived &#8212; or re-energized &#8212; the debate over how we should respond to Islamic terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>From the muddle of bad news surrounding this near-tragedy there emerged one ray of hope.<\/p>\n<p>The family of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab notified Nigerian and foreign security agencies that they were concerned about their son&#8217;s radicalization.<\/p>\n<p>This Muslim family took an extraordinarily painful, courageous, and moral act.  They should be applauded.<\/p>\n<p>If the world is to come to terms with Islamic extremism, these are the sort of heroes who will have to lead the way.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., unfortunately, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/12\/18\/us\/18muslims.html\">many Muslims are wary of cooperating with authorities<\/a>, an unacceptable situation.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever else we do to improve domestic security, we have to help the Islamic community &#8212; especially Islamic leaders in the West &#8212; police their own neighborhoods and families.<\/p>\n<p>When radical extremists emerge, exerting their vicious influence over young Muslims, there must be a shared and coordinated effort to weed them out.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, our intelligence system seems to have failed the people aboard that Northwest Airlines flight.<\/p>\n<p>But it also may have failed a suffering family that was desperately trying to raise the alarm about their troubled and dangerous son.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Word that a terrorist very nearly destroyed an American airliner over Detroit on Christmas day [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1445"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1445"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1445\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1445"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1445"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1445"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
