{"id":1453,"date":"2009-12-30T18:49:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-30T22:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/12\/30\/is-it-time-for-andrew-cuomo-to-descend-from-olympus\/"},"modified":"2009-12-30T18:49:00","modified_gmt":"2009-12-30T22:49:00","slug":"is-it-time-for-andrew-cuomo-to-descend-from-olympus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2009\/12\/30\/is-it-time-for-andrew-cuomo-to-descend-from-olympus\/","title":{"rendered":"Is it time for Andrew Cuomo to descend from Olympus?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last time Andrew Cuomo ran for governor, he was impetuous to a fault, crashing around New York&#8217;s Democratic establishment and nearly leaving his career in shambles.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out there are second acts in American lives, at least when you&#8217;re part of one of the nation&#8217;s most potent political dynasties.<\/p>\n<p>As Attorney General, Mr. Cuomo has reinvented himself as a more temperate, measured version of Eliot Spitzer.<\/p>\n<p>But as we stumble into 2010, Mr. Cuomo needs to rediscover some of that impetuosity and political courage.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not enough for him to sit on the sidelines while Governor David Paterson beats his brains out trying to solve the worst budget crisis in decades.<\/p>\n<p>We need a clear vision sooner rather than later of what he would do differently to improve the state&#8217;s economy and restore sanity (not to mention solvency) to Albany.<\/p>\n<p>In most years, of course, the smart play would be to remain above the fray, marching pure and unsullied toward election day.<\/p>\n<p>He would avoid angering the unions.  He wouldn&#8217;t trouble the public with warnings of painful cutbacks to schools, healthcare and aid to local governments.<\/p>\n<p>But the disaster we face is, potentially, epic.<\/p>\n<p>And so far, I can&#8217;t find anyone with better ideas than the ones Mr. Paterson is advancing for how we should get through it.<\/p>\n<p>In his occasionally inept way, our current Governor has offered straight talk about a future that involves sacrifice and real hardship.<\/p>\n<p>He has outlined an increasingly coherent vision for a leaner, more limited state government.<\/p>\n<p>And he has done so in the face of public employee unions and a state legislature that have proved themselves to be symphonies of dysfunction.<\/p>\n<p>My hope is that Mr. Cuomo will enter this contest, and that he has smarter ideas for how to accomplish this brutal transition.<\/p>\n<p>But sooner rather than later, he&#8217;ll have to descend into the troubling world that New York state has become, get his hands dirty, and take sides in the ugly battles ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, his credibility as a legitimate successor to Mr. Paterson will be in question.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last time Andrew Cuomo ran for governor, he was impetuous to a fault, crashing [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[],"tags":[886],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1453"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1453"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1453\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1453"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1453"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1453"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
