{"id":1476,"date":"2010-01-06T12:47:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-06T16:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/01\/06\/in-the-north-country-its-all-about-the-women\/"},"modified":"2010-01-06T12:47:00","modified_gmt":"2010-01-06T16:47:00","slug":"in-the-north-country-its-all-about-the-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/01\/06\/in-the-north-country-its-all-about-the-women\/","title":{"rendered":"In the North Country, it&#8217;s all about the women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In today&#8217;s edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/wnbz.com\/January%202010\/010610\/FourNewWomen.htm\">WNBZ&#8217;s local news, Jon Alexander reports<\/a> on the surge in political power for women elected to office in Essex County.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The addition of the four supervisors     from Essex, Crown Point, Ticonderoga and Minerva swell the total     number of female supervisors in Essex County to seven \u2013 an all-time     high.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Jon&#8217;s reporting, New York state as a whole ranks 24th in terms of women&#8217;s involvement in politics.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m guessing that the North Country would far much better.<\/p>\n<p>Most of our Assemblymembers &#8212; Dede Scozzafava, Janet Duprey, Teresa Sayward, and Addie Russell &#8212; are women.<\/p>\n<p>State Senator Betty Little and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand wield enormous influence in our region. <\/p>\n<p>More examples?  For the first time ever, a woman, Terry Martino, is executive director of the Adirondack Park Agency. <\/p>\n<p>Women lead North Country Community College and the Adirondack Medical Center, two of the biggest employers in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s heated fight over Essex County&#8217;s DA post was between two women.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u2019s obviously a sign of the times,     it\u2019s a generational shift,\u201d newly sworn in Ticonderoga supervisor Deb Malaney told WNBZ. \u201cWomen have been in the     work force for sometime now and we are coming forward to serve.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Attitudes among men have also changed.  Assemblywoman Janet Duprey told me once that her family tried to dissuade her from entering politics, because it wasn&#8217;t something that &#8220;good girls&#8221; do.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen I walked into the board of     supervisors, some of the guys called me powder puff,&#8221; Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward told WNBZ. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have never     used a powder puff in my life. That\u2019s what you were greeted with.  I will say that there were men on the board at the     time, like George Cannon, who took me under their wing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How does the gender revolution change the political culture in the North Country?
