{"id":1495,"date":"2010-01-11T11:25:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-11T15:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/01\/11\/non-war-related-cuts-at-fort-drum\/"},"modified":"2010-01-11T11:25:00","modified_gmt":"2010-01-11T15:25:00","slug":"non-war-related-cuts-at-fort-drum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/01\/11\/non-war-related-cuts-at-fort-drum\/","title":{"rendered":"Non-war-related cuts at Fort Drum?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Associated Press cites anonymous military officials in reporting that Fort Drum could see up to 30% in cuts to its non-war budget &#8211; everything from lawn mowing to shortened recreation center hours.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20100110\/NEWS03\/301109959%5C\">Watertown Daily Times reports<\/a> the Jefferson County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals already lost a contract to provide shelter services on post.  Managment Commander Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch told the paper:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As the country faces some stiff economic challenges, we are forced to reduce funding and exact a greater level of stewardship over our resources,&#8221; he said. Starting this year, &#8220;performance levels for some installation services will be notably less than we&#8217;ve had in recent years and will remain at that level for the foreseeable future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Senator Chuck Schumer and Congressman Bill Owens are at Fort Drum this morning, with assurances that Washington support for the Army base will remain strong.<\/p>\n<p>The cuts are not terribly good news particularly for Owens, whose special election campaign in NY-23 featured a prominent &#8220;keep Fort Drum strong&#8221; plank.
