{"id":1572,"date":"2010-02-03T22:11:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-04T02:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/02\/03\/essex-farmer-sandy-lewis-prevails-again-in-apa-fight\/"},"modified":"2010-02-03T22:11:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-04T02:11:00","slug":"essex-farmer-sandy-lewis-prevails-again-in-apa-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/02\/03\/essex-farmer-sandy-lewis-prevails-again-in-apa-fight\/","title":{"rendered":"Essex farmer Sandy Lewis prevails again in APA fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Essex County farmer and former Wall Street executive Salim &#8220;Sandy&#8221; Lewis won another round in court yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>According to an article in <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/02\/03\/state-must-pay-farmers-legal-fees\/?scp=8&amp;sq=sandy%2520lewis&amp;st=cse\">the New York Times<\/a>, a state judge has ordered the Adirondack Park Agency to pay all of Lewis&#8217;s legal fees and expenses following a lengthy court fight.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mr. Lewis has asked for more than $200,000 in legal fees, but the amount that the state will actually have to pay is to be determined. Judge Richard B. Meyer, an acting State Supreme Court justice, set a hearing on the issue for Feb. 26.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Times article quotes APA spokesman Keith McKeever, who said, \u201cWe\u2019re reviewing [the decision], and we\u2019re definitely disappointed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Park Agency claimed during protracted litigation that farm worker housing on Lewis&#8217;s land violated the state&#8217;s subdivision rules in the Adirondacks.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis &#8212; and supporters in the farm community &#8212; argued that worker housing is an exempted agricultural activity.<\/p>\n<p>Last July, a state appeals court affirmed Lewis&#8217;s position on a unanimous vote.<\/p>\n<p>The case has been a public-relations nightmare for the agency.  <\/p>\n<p>Last year, the APA&#8217;s top enforcement attorney handling the case, Paul Van Cott, emailed Lewis, calling him a &#8220;sociopath.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Van Cott was later reassigned.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis has since emerged as a prominent anti-APA activist, supporting other legal challenges against the Agency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Essex County farmer and former Wall Street executive Salim &#8220;Sandy&#8221; Lewis won another round in [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1572"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1572"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1572\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1572"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1572"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1572"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
