Well, it took long enough, but Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has officially shed his pesky Canadian citizenship.<\/p>\n

Political wonks and dedicated In Box readers already know<\/a> being born in Canada had come back to haunt this possible presidential contender. As was widely reported across the U.S.<\/a> and in Canada<\/a> earlier this week, Cruz’s renunciation became official on May 14th.<\/p>\n

Some have wondered aloud what took him so long? Here’s a riff on that theme from the Globe and Mail back in January<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Listen, if you want to forfeit your right to a Canadian passport, and distance yourself from this land of socialized medicine, gay marriage and gun control, we understand. But, future former citizen, what\u2019s the hold up? As one immigration lawyer said: \u201cUnless there\u2019s a security issue that hasn\u2019t been disclosed, unless there\u2019s a mental health issue that hasn\u2019t been disclosed, there\u2019s no reason for anything other than a lickety-split process to occur.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before you act, listen to Conrad Black, who offered you this sage advice: \u201cHe\u2019s making a mistake; he\u2019ll never go higher in the U.S. electoral system than he is now, and Canada\u2019s a better governed country than the U.S.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Another January article in The Wire also asked why something relatively simple could drag out so long<\/a> and offered some theories on possible reasons for the delay.<\/p>\n
