{"id":1652,"date":"2010-02-24T11:29:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-24T16:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/02\/24\/will-the-north-country-tip-the-balance-on-dont-ask-dont-tell\/"},"modified":"2011-06-17T10:13:05","modified_gmt":"2011-06-17T14:13:05","slug":"will-the-north-country-tip-the-balance-on-dont-ask-dont-tell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/02\/24\/will-the-north-country-tip-the-balance-on-dont-ask-dont-tell\/","title":{"rendered":"Will the North Country tip the balance on Don&#8217;t Ask Don&#8217;t Tell?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It sounds like a silly question, but the truth is that North Country politicians will have a lot to say about the future of DADT.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, last elected to the House district that stretches to the outskirts of Saranac Lake, is leading the charge to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly.<\/p>\n<p>Army Secretary John McHugh &#8212; last elected as a Republican to the House district that includes Fort Drum &#8212; says he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2010\/02\/mchugh_repeal_dont_ask_dont_te.html\">supports the repeal of of DADT<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Army Secretary John McHugh, the former congressman from Northern and Central New York, said Tuesday he will support President Barack Obama&#8217;s plan to repeal the policy that bans gays from serving openly in the military.<\/p>\n<p>But when pressed, McHugh said he personally opposes any effort in Congress to place an immediate moratorium on dismissals of soldiers who violate the &#8220;don&#8217;t ask, don&#8217;t tell&#8221; policy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rep. Bill Owens, the Democrat from Plattsburgh who now represents Fort Drum and sits on the Armed Services COmmittee, agrees.<\/p>\n<p>He argued earlier this month, &#8220;I believe it&#8217;s appropriate to terminate don&#8217;t ask, don&#8217;t tell.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One other wrinkle in the North Country&#8217;s role in all this:  <\/p>\n<p>One of the most prominent soldiers drummed out of the military because of his sexuality is Lt.
