That page included links to a few notorious sinkholes, like the one that shallowed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IukDWhf7U9I\">cars at the National Corvette Museum<\/a>.The Corvette Museum reportedly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2014\/06\/27\/photos-corvette-museum-finds-greater-fame-in-sinkhole-theyre-going-to-keep-it\/\">plans to keep their sinkhole<\/a>, apparently it&#8217;s become a big draw.<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the big gulp of this watery sinkhole that just sort of eats trees.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cp7no2B322E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/o.canada.com\/news\/giant-sinkhole-shuts-laurier-avenue-in-downtown-ottawa\">sinkhole in downtown Ottawa<\/a> last February was <a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/lrt-tunnelling-likely-cause-of-waller-street-sinkhole-city\">linked to tunneling<\/a> for the construction of a new light rail project.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/afcHR4CbNvg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But why stop there? Here&#8217;s a round up from ABC news of impressive <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/photos\/incredible-sinkholes-world-18651806\">sinkholes from around the world<\/a>. And a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/sinkholes-what-are-they-how-do-they-form-and-why-are-we-seeing-so-many-9136235.html\">Q&amp;A from the UK&#8217;s Independent<\/a> asking why we seem to be seeing so many of them all of a sudden.<\/p>\n<p>Need more? How about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrbrown.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/kl-tunnel-caves-in-the-memes-begin.html\">memes<\/a> on what caused a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/News\/Nation\/2014\/07\/02\/KL-sinkholes-memes\/\">recent sinkhole in Malaysia<\/a>\u00a0(Godzilla, among others) including yet one more use for <a href=\"http:\/\/octanecreative.com\/ducttape\/ask\/index.html\">duct tape<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In case any fellow Luddites are wondering &#8220;Um, what&#8217;s a meme?&#8221; \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_meme\">Wikipedia explains<\/a>\u00a0the concept (pronounced &#8220;meem&#8221;) thusly:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;an activity, concept, catchphrase or piece of media which spreads, often as mimicry, from person to person via the\u00a0<a title=\"Internet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet\">Internet<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-usatoday_1-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_meme#cite_note-usatoday-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Some notable examples include posting a photo of people lying down in public places (called &#8220;<a title=\"Planking (fad)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Planking_(fad)\">planking<\/a>&#8220;) and uploading a short video of people dancing to the\u00a0<a title=\"Harlem Shake (meme)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harlem_Shake_(meme)\">Harlem Shake<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, some might say the Internet is just a giant mental sinkhole. But it can be fun sifting goodies out of the muck.<\/p>\n<p>On a more sobering note, we may be in for more problems of this nature, considering the interplay of humans and their sprawl combined with more flooding and more frequent heavy downpours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every so often some new sinkhole makes the news.
