{"id":1802,"date":"2010-03-25T09:13:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-25T13:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/03\/25\/shake-up-at-st-bernards-school-in-saranac-lake\/"},"modified":"2010-03-25T09:13:00","modified_gmt":"2010-03-25T13:13:00","slug":"shake-up-at-st-bernards-school-in-saranac-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/03\/25\/shake-up-at-st-bernards-school-in-saranac-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Shake-up at St. Bernard&#8217;s school in Saranac Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Roman Catholic officials in Ogdensburg have intervened to dismiss the popular principal of Saranac Lake&#8217;s Catholic elementary school.<\/p>\n<p>It had been reported that Anne Bayruns would stay on at the school, despite pleading guilty to a DUI.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressrepublican.com\/homepage\/local_story_075150602.html?start:int=15\">Bayruns told the Plattsburgh Press-Republican<\/a> that she was happy with local support for her work at the school.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe support of people in Saranac Lake has been amazing. It means that I\u2019m focusing on the positives and on the good things I\u2019m doing with my life.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the press release issued by the Diocese of Ogdensburg: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Parents of St. Bernard\u2019s students were told by Father Thomas E Kornmeyer that the employment contract of school principal Anne Bayruns will not be renewed at the end of June 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made at a special meeting Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been instructed by the Bishop of our Diocese, Bishop-elect Terry LaValley, to not renew her contract for next year,\u201d Father Kornmeyer said.  \u201cIn light of this news, the Education Council and I have agreed that it would be in the best interest of the school and of the students that Ms Bayruns not return as principal effective immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This decision was made after Ms Bayruns entered a guilty plea in court for her September DUI arrest, violating her employment contract.<\/p>\n<p>St. Bernard\u2019s Education Council, with the support of Father Kornmeyer and the teachers, has elicited the support of two well-qualified people to lead the school academically and administratively until the end of the school year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the unanimous and enthusiastic support of the teachers and Education Council at St. Bernard\u2019s, Dorothy Altemus has agreed to serve as our academic coordinator and Jim Ellis has agreed to serve as administrator,\u201d Father Kornmeyer said.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy Altemus was an elementary school teacher for more than 25 years and has served as a teacher\u2019s mentor for several years at different schools, one of which is St. Bernard\u2019s.
