{"id":1805,"date":"2010-03-25T11:48:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-25T15:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/03\/25\/is-it-time-for-the-roman-catholic-church-to-do-more\/"},"modified":"2010-03-25T11:48:00","modified_gmt":"2010-03-25T15:48:00","slug":"is-it-time-for-the-roman-catholic-church-to-do-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/03\/25\/is-it-time-for-the-roman-catholic-church-to-do-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Is it time for the Roman Catholic church to do more?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/25\/world\/europe\/25vatican.html?hp\">The New York Times broke another story this morning<\/a> that appears to connect Pope Benedict to a troubling priest-abuse case, this time in the U.S.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Top Vatican officials \u2014 including the future Pope Benedict XVI \u2014 did not defrock a priest who molested as many as 200 deaf boys, even though several American bishops repeatedly warned them that failure to act on the matter could embarrass the church, according to church files newly unearthed as part of a lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>The internal correspondence from bishops in Wisconsin directly to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future pope, shows that while church officials tussled over whether the priest should be dismissed, their highest priority was protecting the church from scandal. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Many Roman Catholic officials and rank-and-file faithful are impatient with the continued scrutiny from outside the Church.<\/p>\n<p>But the continuing revelations and the truly barbaric nature of the crimes committed by &#8220;predator priests&#8221; raise urgent questions about the organization&#8217;s core values.<\/p>\n<p>Is it true that the Church as an institution was more valuable to top church leaders than the sanctity and safety of vulnerable children?  <\/p>\n<p>If an official involved in the process has been elevated to the supposedly infallible position of Pope, what does that say about the institution&#8217;s movement toward healing, honesty and reconciliation?<\/p>\n<p>Reading the New York Times article will shock and dismay you.
