{"id":1869,"date":"2010-04-20T12:53:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-20T16:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/04\/20\/of-senate-majority-leader-indictments-past-and-future\/"},"modified":"2010-04-20T12:53:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-20T16:53:00","slug":"of-senate-majority-leader-indictments-past-and-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/04\/20\/of-senate-majority-leader-indictments-past-and-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Of Senate majority leader indictments, past and future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York&#8217;s former state Senate majority leader &#8212; and Glens Falls native &#8212; Joe Bruno is slated for sentencing in early May.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican was toppled on Federal fraud charges.<\/p>\n<p>Now, <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/20\/espada-accused-of-using-nonprofit-for-personal-gain\/?hp\">according to the New York Times<\/a>, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is pursuing the current Senate majority leader, Pedro Espada.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrat is accused of siphoning millions of dollars from a family-run non-profit that is supposed to provide healthcare in New York City.  Here&#8217;s Cuomo&#8217;s statement. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSiphoning money from a charity would be egregious under any circumstances, but the fact that this was orchestrated by the state senate majority leader makes it especially reprehensible. In New York, no one is above the law, and this suit should finally make that clear to Senator Espada.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> The suit filed today is a civil action.
