{"id":1938,"date":"2010-04-28T12:06:41","date_gmt":"2010-04-28T16:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=1938"},"modified":"2010-04-28T12:06:41","modified_gmt":"2010-04-28T16:06:41","slug":"nyc-mayor-bloomberg-blasts-arizona-immigration-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/04\/28\/nyc-mayor-bloomberg-blasts-arizona-immigration-law\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Mayor Bloomberg blasts Arizona immigration law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg &#8212; who until he quit the Republican party was the most powerful Republican in the state &#8212; has penned an editorial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/opinions\/2010\/04\/28\/2010-04-28_how_arizonas_law_will_hurt_america_mayor_michael_bloomberg_assails_the_new_immig.html\">in the Daily News<\/a> blasting Arizona&#8217;s harsh illegal-immigrant law.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The law is so vaguely written that it may force officers to stop people who look or dress differently &#8211; or who speak a foreign language, or English with an accent.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bloomberg is calling for comprehensive immigration reform that effectively grants legal residency to all undocumented workers &#8212; though he says some &#8220;illegals&#8221; may not qualify for full citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up interview with the newspaper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/blogs\/dailypolitics\/\">Bloomberg had this to say<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<strong>This country is committing national suicide.<\/strong> We just  passed a health care bill to give coverage to millions of people, tens  of millions of people and we don\u2019t have doctors and we\u2019re not allowing  people who want to come here and be doctors to come here. This is just  craziness. People are developing new drugs in India, rather than here.  They\u2019re going to win the next Nobel prize in China or in Europe, not  here. If we want to have a future, we need to have more immigrants here  and we should get control of our borders and we should decide who we  want, what languages, what skills we need; people who work with their  hands and people who work with their minds and we have to get real about  the 12 million undocumented here. We\u2019re not going to deport them. Give  them permanent status.
