{"id":2141,"date":"2010-05-20T10:44:17","date_gmt":"2010-05-20T14:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=2141"},"modified":"2010-05-20T10:44:54","modified_gmt":"2010-05-20T14:44:54","slug":"corporations-and-calories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/05\/20\/corporations-and-calories\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporations and calories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a spirited debate about the &#8220;soda tax&#8221; going on in the comments section of yesterday&#8217;s post.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/05\/19\/individual-choice-the-soda-tax\/\">Check it out and add your thoughts.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the other side of the coin.<\/p>\n<p>Another argument for reducing obesity goes like this.\u00a0 The main cause of obesity is eating too many calories.\u00a0 To curb obesity, we need to reduce the overall number of calories available.<\/p>\n<p>As the corporate food industry watches lawmakers and the public approach a tipping point about unhealthy eating &#8211; and they monitor the threat of taxation of unhealthy foods &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/food\/archive\/2010\/05\/todays-food-companies-the-quick-and-the-dead\/56977\/\">food companies are rallying behind the caloric reduction method<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthyweightcommit.org\/\">One coalition of food companies<\/a> has vowed to sell 1.5 trillion fewer calories over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>Will it work?\u00a0 There&#8217;s are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/food\/archive\/2010\/05\/the-latest-obama-ally-the-food-industry\/56868\/\">lots of skeptics<\/a>, including former industy insider, Hank Cardello:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So is a 1.5 trillion calorie reduction over five years enough to make a  difference? Clearly, focusing on lowering calories to deal with the  obesity problem is the right call, and the Foundation should be  applauded for taking a stand, but this is a drop in the bucket and  represents only a 0.5 percent reduction in the 300 trillion calories  available for Americans to consume each year. That translates to less  than 1.5 pounds of added weight per person.
