{"id":2221,"date":"2010-06-15T11:23:26","date_gmt":"2010-06-15T15:23:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=2221"},"modified":"2010-06-15T11:23:26","modified_gmt":"2010-06-15T15:23:26","slug":"raw-milk-riles-the-midwest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/06\/15\/raw-milk-riles-the-midwest\/","title":{"rendered":"Raw milk riles the Midwest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Midwest is the epicenter of the raw milk wars these days.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin farmers are challenging the state&#8217;s ban on raw milk sales (and therefore Governor Doyle&#8217;s raw milk sale veto) in court.\u00a0 It appears they&#8217;re using the &#8220;milk coop&#8221; argument &#8211; that consumers who purchase shares in a farm have a right to buy raw milk from that farm.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/local\/96246824.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:D\">From the AP:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The case isn&#8217;t a direct challenge to Wisconsin&#8217;s ban on raw milk  sales, but if Kay and Wayne Craig prevail, it would open up a loophole  large enough to drive a herd of dairy cows through.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our entire system of licensing would be in jeopardy,&#8221; said Cheryl  Daniels, the food safety division attorney with the Wisconsin Department  of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are some examples in New York, especially in New York City, of &#8220;raw milk buying clubs&#8221; purchasing shares in a cow to bypass the state&#8217;s raw milk certification requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile in Minnesota, an E Coli outbreak traced to a rogue dairyman&#8217;s farm is prompting a crackdown on illegal raw milk sales in the state.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/lifestyle\/health\/95044099.html?page=1&amp;c=y\">Read the fascinating &#8220;rebel history&#8221; of Michael Hartmann in the Star-Tribune.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Midwest is the epicenter of the raw milk wars these days.
