{"id":2248,"date":"2010-06-20T10:51:31","date_gmt":"2010-06-20T14:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=2248"},"modified":"2010-06-20T10:51:31","modified_gmt":"2010-06-20T14:51:31","slug":"remember-the-north-countrys-missing-fathers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/06\/20\/remember-the-north-countrys-missing-fathers\/","title":{"rendered":"Remember the North Country&#8217;s missing fathers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just spent two weeks away from my son Nicholas.\u00a0 Wimpy as it sounds, I was miserable almost from day one.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that I spend all my time being a dad, obviously.\u00a0 But in the 14 years that my son has been around he&#8217;s definitely become sort of my pivot point, the main compass reference to most days.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, I&#8217;ve talked to a lot of fathers who for one reason or another can&#8217;t be with their children.<\/p>\n<p>Some are separated by divorce and by the wreckage of relationships with their former wives.<\/p>\n<p>Others are supporting their families by working away from home.<\/p>\n<p>The Jamaican apple pickers in the Champlain Valley.\u00a0 Migrant dairy workers in the St. Lawrence Valley.\u00a0 Eastern Europeans working in the resorts and restaurants of the Adirondacks.<\/p>\n<p>These men send remittances home every month, sustaining and providing new opportunities for children they may only see at long intervals.<\/p>\n<p>There are also a lot of North Country men who are cut loose from their kids for long stretches.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thinking in particular of the soldiers serving repeated tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.\u00a0 Imagine the toll of days and years missed, of milestones unmarked except via telephone and email.<\/p>\n<p>And also the corrections officers who have to put in long years of service in downstate prisons before winning reassignment back in our part of the state.<\/p>\n<p>And then there are the thousands of inmates housed here in our prisons, guys whose mistakes, lack of education, and (yes) downright criminality have led them into exile.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of them are dads, too.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve spoken with inmates about the ache and sense of helplessness they feel as their children grow up and away while their dads sit behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>After my brief stint away from Nicholas, I know just a taste of that dislocation, the sense of a piece being missing from every day.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a nagging sense that however hard you&#8217;re working for your family, there&#8217;s always some important responsibility, some vital act of care and joy, going unfinished.<\/p>\n<p>I have the great blessed fortune to be home again on this Father&#8217;s Day.\u00a0\u00a0 So I&#8217;ll send my best wishes out to the dads who, for whatever reason, can&#8217;t be.<\/p>\n<p>Safe travels to all of you &#8212; and come home soon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just spent two weeks away from my son Nicholas.\u00a0 Wimpy as it sounds, I [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2248"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2248"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2248\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2248"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2248"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2248"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
