{"id":2326,"date":"2010-07-01T17:44:34","date_gmt":"2010-07-01T21:44:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=2326"},"modified":"2010-07-02T10:43:58","modified_gmt":"2010-07-02T14:43:58","slug":"a-happy-canada-day-with-hrh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/07\/01\/a-happy-canada-day-with-hrh\/","title":{"rendered":"A Happy Canada Day with the Queen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The hubby &amp; I just got back from spending a few pleasant hours with tens of thousands of other happy revelers on Parliament Hill.\u00a0 Here is a fine Canadian sight on the Rideau Canal as we peddled toward our goal.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2328\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/07\/01\/a-happy-canada-day-with-hrh\/img_7330-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2328\" title=\"IMG_7330\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2010\/07\/IMG_73301-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2010\/07\/IMG_73301-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2010\/07\/IMG_73301-150x105.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2010\/07\/IMG_73301-450x316.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That party will go strong until the final fireworks show, which starts around 10 pm.\u00a0 This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliamenthill.gc.ca\/text\/camera-eng.html\">web cam<\/a> that shows the main stage fronting the Parliament building and the iconic Peace Tower.\u00a0 (Tip: the supervised, free valet bike parking lots are great. Kudos to the NCC and the service provider for supporting bike transportation in this practical manner.)<\/p>\n<p>The Peace Tower is usually topped by the red maple leaf, but today that national flag came down when the Queen arrived. As the official head of state in this constitutional monarchy, <em>her<\/em> standard went up to fly as long as she was on the premises.<\/p>\n<p>We did not arrive early enough to get good views of the Queen, the Prime Minister or other dignitaries.\u00a0 But we did get great views of Mounties (on very fine horseflesh), the empty carriage (landau, actually) which had delivered the Queen and Prince Philip, and various bands as all filed out, looking very sharp and fine.<\/p>\n<p>Small things that stick with me: the tight crowd that shuffled toward the entry gates, eager to get in, but all very calm and well-mannered. No x-rays or metal detectors, just a quick glance into my backpack by a polite officer.\u00a0 I did not encounter any signs of trouble or protesters of any sort, though by night&#8217;s end there will be plenty of drunks on those streets. The happy cheers of the crowd.\u00a0 The singing of &#8216;God Save the Queen&#8221; by Quebec soprano Marie-Josee Lord, followed immediately by loud, energetic hip-hop, <em>en fran\u00e7ais <\/em>(by a group I am unable to identify at this writing, sorry!).<\/p>\n<p>This is the face of Canada Day in the capital, and the face of the modern monarchy.\u00a0 Her Majesty must attend endless public and private events, to praise and recognize individual, cultural and national achievement, while being the personification of civil discourse and constitutional governance.<\/p>\n<p>There is disagreement about the role of kings and queens in an age of participatory democracy. (Though &#8220;HM&#8221; would be correct.)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Royal Highness<\/strong> (<a title=\"Abbreviation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abbreviation\">abbreviation<\/a> <strong>HRH<\/strong>) is a <a title=\"Style (manner of address)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Style_%28manner_of_address%29\">style<\/a> (<em>His Royal Highness<\/em> or <em>Her Royal Highness<\/em>); plural <strong>Royal Highnesses<\/strong> (abbreviation <strong>TRH<\/strong>, <em>Their Royal Highnesses<\/em>). It appears in front of the names of some members of some <a title=\"Royal family\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_family\">royal families<\/a> other than the <a title=\"Monarch\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monarch\">King<\/a> or <a title=\"Queen regnant\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen_regnant\">Queen<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And her husband, the consort who is not a king.
