{"id":2333,"date":"2010-07-02T10:19:33","date_gmt":"2010-07-02T14:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=2333"},"modified":"2010-07-02T16:20:19","modified_gmt":"2010-07-02T20:20:19","slug":"another-adirondack-pioneer-edwin-ketchledge-passes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/07\/02\/another-adirondack-pioneer-edwin-ketchledge-passes\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Adirondack pioneer, Edwin Ketchledge, passes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Updated:\u00a0 With a link to Mike Lynch&#8217;s obituary in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>A friend emailed yesterday to say that Edwin Ketchledge &#8212; known widely as &#8220;Ketch&#8221; &#8212; passed away this week at the age of 85.<\/p>\n<p>He was, according to my correspondent, &#8220;a hugely important figure in founding the summit steward program and  conservation of alpine vegetation in the Adirondacks and throughout  Northeast .&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I just rang Neil Woodworth, head of the Adirondack Mountain Club, who remembered Ketch as an avid outdoorsman, and a decorated veteran of the 10th Mountain Division&#8217;s Italian campaign.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20100701\/OBIT05\/100709988\/-1\/obit\">Watertown Daily Times<\/a>, he&#8217;ll be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Ketch was also an author and a scientists &#8212; and one of the creators of the now ubiquitous &#8220;if you carry it in, carry it out&#8221; slogan that has helped reduce the trash load in the North Country woods.<\/p>\n<p>I only met Ketch once, on top of Whiteface Mountain, where he was talking with visitors and working &#8212; if I remember correctly &#8212; with a new class of summit stewards.<\/p>\n<p>By coincidence, I was up on Poke-O-Moonshine yesterday, talking with one of the young folks who have helped keep that program alive.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have a brief remembrance of Ketch on Monday during the 8 o&#8217;clock hour, and you can read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adirondackalmanack.com\/2010\/07\/remembering-ketch-educator-and.html\">a nice obituary here at the Adirondack Almanack website<\/a> and a more detailed remembrance in the <a href=\"http:\/\/adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/514127.html?nav=5008\">Adirondack Daily Enterprise<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Updated:\u00a0 With a link to Mike Lynch&#8217;s obituary in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.
