{"id":2353,"date":"2010-07-08T14:10:56","date_gmt":"2010-07-08T18:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=2353"},"modified":"2010-07-08T14:13:16","modified_gmt":"2010-07-08T18:13:16","slug":"usda-the-soda-tax-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/07\/08\/usda-the-soda-tax-works\/","title":{"rendered":"USDA: The soda tax works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/Publications\/ERR100\/\">new study by USDA economists<\/a> concludes a 20% soda price increase would shed an average of 4 pounds in a year from the average American.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Given these reductions in calorie consumption, results show an estimated  decline in adult overweight prevalence (66.9 to 62.4 percent) and  obesity prevalence (33.4 to 30.4 percent), as well as the child  at-risk-for-overweight prevalence (32.3 to 27.0 percent) and the  overweight prevalence (16.6 to 13.7 percent).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, the USDA believes we can cut America&#8217;s obesity epidemic by 3 percentage points &#8211; just by taxing soda and other sugary beverages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/food\/archive\/2010\/07\/usda-says-soda-taxes-really-work\/59210\/\">As Marion Nestle points out in The Atlantic<\/a>, the beverage industry knows this all very well, or it wouldn&#8217;t have spent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/03\/nyregion\/03sodatax.html?_r=2\">$9.4 million lobbying Albany<\/a> to kill the soda tax in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Given the tax obesity imposes on everyone in the form of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/04\/13\/obesity-and-health-care\/\">higher health care costs<\/a>, the soda tax seems like a no-brainer, right?\u00a0 We do it with tobacco and alcohol &#8211; why not soda?<\/p>\n<p>Enter <a href=\"http:\/\/cjonline.com\/opinion\/2010-03-15\/column_soda_tax_proposals_no_magic_cure_for_obesity\">the slippery slope argument<\/a>.\u00a0 First, soda.\u00a0 Next, twinkies.\u00a0 Or, bacon.\u00a0 Well, no one would be insane enough to mess with bacon.\u00a0 But you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>The other side of the obesity problem is lack of exercise.\u00a0 As a commenter has argued before here on the blog, do we tax people who don&#8217;t go to the gym?<\/p>\n<p>No one likes to be told what to eat.\u00a0 But as the evidence grows that obesity and overeating are a major challenge to America&#8217;s future, the soda tax proposal is low-hanging fruit.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s unlikely to go away, despite the beverage industry&#8217;s mightiest lobbying efforts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study by USDA economists concludes a 20% soda price increase would shed an [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2353"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/11"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2353"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2353\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2353"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2353"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2353"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
