Travel ran a piece this morning on &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/travel.yahoo.com\/p-interests-35009924\" target=\"_blank\">America&#8217;s Island Paradises<\/a>&#8220;&#8211;and I like the intro:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>White sand beaches, pristine waters and scenic getaways aren&#8217;t as far away as you may think. Travelers who&#8217;d prefer to skip a long flight to Hawaii or the Caribbean can find many island paradises right in the continental United States \u2014 and they&#8217;re only a drive, boat ride or short flight away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Your usual suspects are in here, including Catalina Island (southern California) and the San Juans (northwest of Seattle, WA) and the paddler&#8217;s paradise of the Boundary Waters in Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s one of our paradisaical patches, the Thousand Islands:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As its name suggests, the Thousand Island Region comprises more than 1,000 islands along the U.S.-Canada border, surrounded by the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario and Adirondacks Mountains. Jess Moss, editor of Fodor&#8217;s, recommends staying in the historic Alexandria Bay in upstate New York. Visitors can explore upstate New York&#8217;s wilderness in several of the region&#8217;s state parks and also enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, boating and hiking.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The typos are theirs, and you can question any of the content, but it&#8217;s nice to see the North Country on the national radar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Snarky headline aside, this is a good thing: Yahoo!
