{"id":2432,"date":"2010-07-28T10:59:48","date_gmt":"2010-07-28T14:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=2432"},"modified":"2010-07-28T11:37:52","modified_gmt":"2010-07-28T15:37:52","slug":"historic-arctic-find-wreck-of-hms-investigator-located","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/07\/28\/historic-arctic-find-wreck-of-hms-investigator-located\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic Arctic find: wreck of HMS Investigator located"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The annals of Arctic exploration include lost ships whose crews came to unknown ends.\u00a0 Centuries of efforts to unravel those mysteries are producing important finds, including a big one, that came this week.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the lead from an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.calgaryherald.com\/technology\/Exclusive+Historic+Northwest+Passage+wreck+discovered+beneath+Beaufort\/3330222\/story.html?cid=megadrop_story\"> exclusive report filed by Don Martin.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MERCY BAY, N.W.T. &#8211; The historic ship whose crew discovered Canada\u2019s Northwest Passage has been found 155 years after it was abandoned and sank in this oft-frozen Arctic bay atop isolated Banks Island.<\/p>\n<p>The wreck of HMS Investigator was detected in shallow water within days of Parks Canada archeologists launching their ambitious search for the 422-tonne ship from this chilly tent encampment on the Beaufort Sea shoreline.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>The find is being positioned as adding to Canada&#8217;s case for sovereignty in the Arctic.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>Who cares?\u00a0 Well, that&#8217;s an issue of ever-growing significance. Retreating sea ice is generating accelerating interest in previously-inaccessible land, natural resources and sea routes.<\/div>\n<div>Sooner than expected, the Arctic region is facing a potential international gold rush for the goodies and the shorter shipping routes.\u00a0 Changes that are feared and welcomed, depending on one&#8217;s viewpoint.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpost.com\/news\/Canadians+discover+long+lost+ship+fundamental+arctic+sovereignty\/3329673\/story.html\"><br \/>\n<\/a>In this article for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpost.com\/news\/Canadians+discover+long+lost+ship+fundamental+arctic+sovereignty\/3329673\/story.html\">National Post<\/a>, Martin alludes to that larger issue:<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>Environment Minister Jim Prentice, who arrived at the camp on Tuesday, said that finding a relic linked to the discovery of the Northwest Passage represents a reasserted Canadian claim to Arctic sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fundamental to Canadian sovereignty in the North,\u201d he said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[A]nd the tragic tale of Investigator is one of the most amazing stories of Arctic history. It\u2019s a tale of incredible determination and suffering,\u201d Mr. Prentice said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>This August Parks Canada archeologists will resume efforts to locate the <em>Erebus<\/em> and <em>Terror<\/em>,\u00a0 two vessels lost on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/10631\/an-enduring-mystery-the-franklin-expedition\">famed Franklin Expedition<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>(Full disclosure: Don Martin is an un-related friend and neighbor.
