{"id":2726,"date":"2010-09-15T02:18:04","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T06:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=2726"},"modified":"2010-09-15T07:25:18","modified_gmt":"2010-09-15T11:25:18","slug":"curiously-low-turnout-in-the-heated-ny-23-gop-primary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/09\/15\/curiously-low-turnout-in-the-heated-ny-23-gop-primary\/","title":{"rendered":"Curiously low turnout in the heated NY-23 GOP primary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a curious thing.<\/p>\n<p>The combined vote tally in the much-ballyhooed NY-23 primary between tea party champion Doug Hoffman and establishment Republican Matt Doheny appears to have been only about 31,000 thousand votes.<\/p>\n<p>(I&#8217;m fudging a bit because we don&#8217;t have the final tally of absentee ballots and these numbers aren&#8217;t official.)<\/p>\n<p>In last November&#8217;s special election, Doug Hoffman alone received 69,553 votes.<\/p>\n<p>So what gives?  Where did all those Hoffman supporters go?  Certainly not to Doheny &#8212; his numbers were pretty anemic, too.<\/p>\n<p>I know primaries have low turnout generally &#8212; but so do special elections.<\/p>\n<p>If these numbers hold up, it means Hoffman managed to bring back only about a quarter of the support he won just a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>This could also be tough news for Republicans in general, given that Democrat Bill Owens managed to win more than 73,000 votes last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a curious thing.
