A few minutes ago, Doug Hoffman issued a formal statement that he will proceed as a 3rd-party Conservative candidate in NY-23.<\/p>\n
After conceding the GOP primary race, his opening salvo was directed at Republican Matt Doheny:<\/p>\n
“It was not an easy victory for Mr. Doheny; he outspent my campaign by a 12-1 margin and had the backing of all 11 of the GOP bosses and yet only out-polled me by a few hundred votes.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Hoffman goes on to add this personal note:<\/p>\n
“Understand, I do not continue this race out of spite or because of self conceived virtues. I continue in this race because of the failings of my opponents to be truthful with the voters.<\/span><\/p>\n
“Whether we look a Mr. Owens’ support of Obama-care or Mr. Doheny claim to be pro-life when in fact he supports abortion through the first trimester, we see two candidates who will do or say anything to get a vote elected.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Matt Doheny has put a brave face today on the challenges of running a campaign against Democrat Bill Owens, while also contending with attacks from Hoffman.<\/p>\n
But it would be difficult to frame this development in any other way than as a major blow to the GOP’s chances to retake the 23rd House seat.<\/p>\n
On this day when Doheny was claiming victory in the Republican Primary, Hoffman’s dramatic announcement eclipses — or at least complicates — what should have been a good news cycle for Doheny.<\/p>\n
