{"id":2896,"date":"2010-10-06T08:12:10","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T12:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=2896"},"modified":"2010-10-08T08:39:18","modified_gmt":"2010-10-08T12:39:18","slug":"in-2010-do-republicans-deserve-to-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/10\/06\/in-2010-do-republicans-deserve-to-win\/","title":{"rendered":"In 2010, do Republicans deserve to win?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday&#8217;s political headlines across the news-o-sphere were all about apathy:\u00a0 It turns out Hispanics support the Democratic party by landslide margins, but roughly half of them aren&#8217;t going to vote.<\/p>\n<p>Across the electorate, voters generally say they&#8217;re about divided on which party they support; and on many of the issues they actually prefer Democratic policy ideas.<\/p>\n<p>But again, a big chunk of Democratic voters say they&#8217;re unlikely to actually cast a ballot this year &#8212; a level of apathy that could give the Republicans a whopping <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/143363\/GOP-Positioned-Among-Likely-Midterm-Voters.aspx\">56-38% advantage at the polls, according to Gallup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Translated into House seats, that could give the GOP its largest majority since the 1920s.\u00a0 (Most analysts expect smaller, but still epic gains for Republicans.)<\/p>\n<p>If this were a case of American voters being narrowly divided over policy, over the character of the politicians, over the values of the two parties, I&#8217;d say let the chips fall where they may.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s increasingly clear that this vote is between people who care enough about their values to vote &#8212; and people who, quite simply, don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>In a democracy, for practical as well as sound philosophical reasons, victory should go to the people with the most passion, the most energy, and the greatest willingness to participate in the process.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2270046\/\">Slate has a very interesting article<\/a> in today&#8217;s edition talking about the &#8220;contempt&#8221; of American progressives.<\/p>\n<p>Writer Shankar Vedantam argues that this contempt is more corrosive than the anger and rage we see among conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>But Vedantam overlooks one factor:\u00a0 anger usually causes you to fight, while contempt usually causes a person to walk away.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re seeing this election cycle.\u00a0 Millions of progressives wanted faster fixes, more fiery rhetoric.\u00a0 They talked about hope, but what they really wanted was to see the right take one in the eye.<\/p>\n<p>They got a healthcare bill and finance sector reform and Federal stimulus, but what they really hungered for was to see Rush Limbaugh humbled.<\/p>\n<p>Because that didn&#8217;t happen, they&#8217;re checking out, taking their ballots and going home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday&#8217;s political headlines across the news-o-sphere were all about apathy:\u00a0 It turns out Hispanics support [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[886],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2896"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2896"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2896\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2896"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2896"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2896"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
