{"id":3160,"date":"2010-11-04T15:11:27","date_gmt":"2010-11-04T19:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3160"},"modified":"2010-11-05T10:03:43","modified_gmt":"2010-11-05T14:03:43","slug":"republicans-win-rural-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/11\/04\/republicans-win-rural-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Republicans win rural again, across US and in NY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Box readers know that one of my big preoccupations is the political divide between urban and rural America.<\/p>\n<p>Veteran reporter and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyyonder.com\/republicans-win-rural-%E2%80%94-and-house\/2010\/11\/03\/3022\">analyst Bill Bishop<\/a> has written an insightful take on Tuesday&#8217;s vote and his conclusion is that once again the GOP won big by relying on a vast swath of small town voters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The explanation by many is that Democrats lost the South,&#8221; Bishop writes, &#8220;but the rural  losses were mostly in the north. Democrats now can ask, &#8220;What&#8217;s the  matter with New Hampshire?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Bishop&#8217;s analysis &#8212; written with Julie Ardery &#8212; 39 of the Democratic districts claimed by the GOP this week were in heavily rural areas.<\/p>\n<p>That accounts for fully two-thirds of their gains.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Before the election almost half (61) of the 125 most rural districts  were held by Democrats,&#8221; Bishop notes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;By the end of the day Tuesday, the number of  rural Democrats had been cut to just 22.
