{"id":3174,"date":"2010-11-08T17:42:44","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T22:42:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3174"},"modified":"2010-11-09T11:26:05","modified_gmt":"2010-11-09T16:26:05","slug":"the-anti-cheese-upheaval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/11\/08\/the-anti-cheese-upheaval\/","title":{"rendered":"The anti-cheese upheaval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boy, I didn&#8217;t realize people hated cheese so much (probably because they love it but know they shouldn&#8217;t eat too much).\u00a0 Michael Moss&#8217; article in Sunday&#8217;s New York Times (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/07\/us\/07fat.html?_r=1&amp;pagewanted=all\">read it here<\/a>) about the USDA&#8217;s contradictory messages about cheese exploded into the blogosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Pollan tweeted: &#8220;The USDA&#8217;s conflict of interest problem in a nutshell: our tax dollars at work promoting Domino&#8217;s pizza.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nutritionist Marion Nestle lays out that conflict of interest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/kerry-trueman\/lets-ask-marion-nestle-co_b_780081.html\">on Huffington Post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why is USDA in bed with dairy lobbying groups? That&#8217;s its job. From its  beginnings in the 1860s, USDA&#8217;s role was to promote U.S. agricultural  production and sales, with the full support of what was then a largely  agricultural Congress. Only in the 1970s, did USDA pick up all those  pesky food assistance programs and capture the &#8220;lead federal agency&#8221;  role in providing dietary advice to the public.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Talking Points Memo&#8217;s Josh Marshall calls it &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkingpointsmemo.com\/archives\/2010\/11\/the_cheese_industrial_complex.php\">the cheese-industrial complex<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The Atlantic has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticwire.com\/opinions\/view\/opinion\/The-Federal-Government-Wants-to-Fatten-You-Up-With-Cheese-5695\/\">a reader&#8217;s guide to the cheese-and-UDSA-bashing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, actually, it&#8217;s not that people hate cheese so much.\u00a0 It&#8217;s that they<a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/Business\/Donald-Marron\/2010\/1108\/Euthanized-cows-and-caves-full-of-cheese-the-government-policies-behind-Got-Milk\"> hate a government agency that pursues contradictory policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My two cents.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had dairy farmers say numerous times, &#8220;want to help a dairy farmer?\u00a0 Buy more pizza.&#8221;\u00a0 The reality is most dairy farmers are selling a commodity, the price of which they cannot control.\u00a0 Whether it&#8217;s cheese fries or mozzarella sticks or pizza, the growth of these not-so-healthy fast foods provides demand for the whole-milk cheeses dairy farmers produce.\u00a0 But even though cheese consumption has increased three-fold since the 1970s, dairy farmers are still losing money!<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me to my second point.\u00a0 As almost anyone will tell you, the federal milk pricing system is a mess.\u00a0 It will be revisited next year as a part of the debate over the Farm Bill.\u00a0 So will the whole range of contradictory messages that make up the U.S. farm subsidy system.<\/p>\n<p>So even if the furor over the USDA&#8217;s cheese marketing program goes silent as the news cycle ticks ever forward, the issues the NYT article raises will certainly intensify as the 2012 Farm Bill looms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boy, I didn&#8217;t realize people hated cheese so much (probably because they love it but [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[4815,36,4803],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3174"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/11"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3174"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3174\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3174"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3174"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3174"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
