{"id":3225,"date":"2010-11-16T09:42:39","date_gmt":"2010-11-16T14:42:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3225"},"modified":"2010-11-16T10:16:39","modified_gmt":"2010-11-16T15:16:39","slug":"morning-listens-on-the-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/11\/16\/morning-listens-on-the-farm\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning listens: on the farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3226\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/11\/16\/morning-listens-on-the-farm\/kimball_wide\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3226\" title=\"kimball_wide\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2010\/11\/kimball_wide-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2010\/11\/kimball_wide-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2010\/11\/kimball_wide-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2010\/11\/kimball_wide-450x253.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/files\/2010\/11\/kimball_wide.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A few nice farm pieces to start your day.<\/p>\n<p>Essex County&#8217;s own Kristen Kimball &#8211; and her book, <em>The Dirty Life<\/em> &#8211; was featured <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2010\/11\/12\/131268939\/-the-dirty-life-from-city-girl-to-hog-butcher#commentBlock\">last night on All Things Considered<\/a> (thanks to on-site help from Brian Mann).\u00a0 Kimball is a city girl who had never farmed before in her life.\u00a0 Now she and her husband run a CSA for 150 families.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t forget, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/16484\/learning-to-love-farming-dirt-and-all\">Todd Moe had it first<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvestpublicmedia.org\/article\/soaring-grain-prices-welcome-surprise-farmers\">It&#8217;s good times for Midwest crop farmers<\/a>, with prices soaring.\u00a0 But that may spell bad news for us consumers in the supermarket.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, cattle farmers are being left out of the party, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvestpublicmedia.org\/article\/beef-prices-stay-low-small-ranchers-cry-foul\">and they&#8217;re suspicious<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a similar concern many dairy farmers cry foul about.\u00a0 Dairy processing is concentrated in the hands of a very few large corporations.\u00a0 When milk or cheese prices go up in the grocery store, farmers don&#8217;t necessarily get a corresponding hike in their milk price.\u00a0 The federal government is investigating <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.timesunion.com\/nypotomac\/schumer-applauds-doj-action-against-nations-largest-dairy-processor\/442\/\">potential anti-competitive practices in the dairy industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, two of the above stories aired on NPR, but I linked them through a new public broadcasting partnership in the Midwest called <a href=\"http:\/\/harvestpublicmedia.org\/\">Harvest Public Media<\/a>.\u00a0 They&#8217;re doing great reporting on agriculture in the heartland.\u00a0 make them <a href=\"http:\/\/harvestpublicmedia.org\/blogs\">a regular stop<\/a> if you&#8217;re following agriculture&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few nice farm pieces to start your day.
