{"id":3241,"date":"2010-11-18T06:28:55","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T11:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3241"},"modified":"2010-11-18T11:22:24","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T16:22:24","slug":"saranac-lake-mayor-warns-of-trudeau-departure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/11\/18\/saranac-lake-mayor-warns-of-trudeau-departure\/","title":{"rendered":"Saranac Lake Mayor warns of Trudeau departure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma; font-size: x-small;\"><\/p>\n<div>Saranac Lake village Mayor Clyde Rabideau has sent out a commentary offering additional details and raising new concerns about the possibility that Trudeau Institute &#8212; the bio-research lab that anchors a big part of the village economy &#8212; could move to North Carolina.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In the editorial, he promises a serious fight to try to retain the facility.\u00a0 Here is his commentary in full.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Trudeau  Institute might leave us\u2014an option affirmed by senior  management&#8212;something most Saranac Lakers thought impossible until few  weeks ago.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">After all, Trudeau Institute has been around for 126 years and was founded by the village\u2019s first mayor, Edward L. Trudeau.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Nothing could be more Saranac Lake than Trudeau Institute.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">There\u2019s  a buzz that representatives will soon head to Kannapolis, North  Carolina, home to the North Carolina Research Center\u2014nestled in the  Charlottesville-University-Research Hospital-hotbed\u2014to check out its one million square feet of<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">state-of-the art, ready-to-go lab space, equipment and prime research facilities. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">A Trudeau spokesman said they did not want their staff \u201cbuying houses\u201d  until their \u201cstrategic planning,\u201d now underway, was complete.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Now,  like most buzzes, it may or may not be true, but Trudeau\u2019s Chairman of  the Board lives in Charlottesville and Trudeau management say they need  an urban research hospital environment like Kannapolis to get more federal funding, so it is believable.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">And, even if it isn\u2019t true, Saranac Lakers should still take its measure and gird for battle.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">So what might magnetize Trudeau to Kannapolis?<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">A heck of a lot, truth be told.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">It\u2019s one of the fastest growing  areas of the country in which a multi-millionaire visionary by the name  of David Murdock, bulldozed the Cannon Textile\/Towel mills in the city\u2019s  downtown and built<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">a Land of Biotech Oz through a public-private partnership with all the bells and whistles for<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">research innovation and profit. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">It is  a one-stop-shop for biotech research and for-profit ventures, with  plenty of moolah to back it up, alongside universities like Duke, UNC  and UC State and beau coup hospitals.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">It\u2019s got mojo to spare.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Who would blame Trudeau\u2019s management for checking it out and sending its \u201cfaculty\u201d there?<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">I do and here\u2019s why:<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">We\u2019re not like Kannapolis or the rest of the country for that matter, and that is our strong point.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">We\u2019re  unique and grand discoveries regularly take root here\u2014in the Capital of  the Adirondacks&#8211;amidst the solitude and serenity of our evergreens and  lakes where great ideas take flight.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Saranac Lake has never been the epicenter of \u201curban-based, biotech, throw-the-money-at-\u2018em science.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">No, we\u2019re the epicenter of humanity\u2014right where we want to be\u2014where our forbearers gave comfort and solace to those that were ill.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">We always cared and always will, regardless of how much \u201cmoolah\u201d is involved.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Our scientists carry backpacks to work and not briefcases. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">They wear hiking boots and not high-heels. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Backpacks and hiking boots probably aren\u2019t that sexy in Kannapolis\u2026but are more practical.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">We are unique and meaningful and so shall be the future discoveries at Trudeau<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"><strong> IN<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> Saranac Lake.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Kannapolis  is a wake-up call, as is the so-called \u201cStrategic planning\u201d now  underway at Trudeau, which many say is just window-dressing for a move  to Kannapolis.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Saranac  Lake and the State of New York must invest in real intellectual  infrastructure that is uniquely \u201cours\u201d and fearlessly compassionate, if  it is to survive and thrive in the biotech future where money seduces, just as Kannapolis, our most  fearsome competitor, is doing in its own way.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">We must lower our shoulder and push ahead with our own strategic plan and a solid, never-give-up commitment, staking our future on what has sustained us for generations, yet adapting as we must.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">If federal grant money is Trudeau\u2019s answer, we must devise ways to get it to them.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">We  must also make sure in the days ahead that the Trudeau Board of  Trustees, though they may not live here, understand that the very  lifeblood of the institution they safeguard pulsates <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"><strong><em>only <\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">if  it has our indomitable Adirondack people, place and purpose&#8230;a people,  a place and a purpose that will not go gentle into that good night. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;
