{"id":3284,"date":"2010-11-24T11:44:17","date_gmt":"2010-11-24T16:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3284"},"modified":"2010-11-29T10:37:34","modified_gmt":"2010-11-29T15:37:34","slug":"ill-pass-on-the-turkey-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/11\/24\/ill-pass-on-the-turkey-please\/","title":{"rendered":"(I&#8217;ll) Pass (on) the turkey, please!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s my Thanksgiving day confession:\u00a0 I&#8217;m <em>so<\/em> off turkey.\u00a0 I know, I know.\u00a0 Blasphemy.\u00a0 I might as well knock the hat off a pilgrim, or stuff cranberries up my nose at the dinner table.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m not just being a contrarian.\u00a0 The truth is that I hated turkey (dry white meat, chewy dark) for years without quite noticing that my zeal for the sacrificial bird was waning.<\/p>\n<p>Still, there it is.\u00a0 When I think about settling in for a big feast &#8212; and trust me, no one loves a big feast more than me &#8212; I can&#8217;t think of a cut of meat I&#8217;d less rather have on the table.<\/p>\n<p>(Okay, that&#8217;s an exaggeration, but only a slight one.)<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, turkey is really hard to do well.\u00a0 It&#8217;s lean, but you don&#8217;t dare serve it pink, so the fine line between safe and dry is as thin as your mother-in-law&#8217;s arched eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>Rebels have been trying to deep-fat-fry or pressure cook or barbecue their way to an easier, tastier turkey for years.<\/p>\n<p>But even a Michigan-loving fool like me can&#8217;t quite swallow the idea of deep-fat-frying an entire turkey.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s something about marrying the puritanical paleness of turkey with the end-times excess of sizzling lard that just won&#8217;t square in my head.<\/p>\n<p>So we&#8217;ve begun looking further afield for our Thanksgiving dinner.\u00a0 We throw in some ham, just so the traditionalists have something to cling to.<\/p>\n<p>But we&#8217;re also opt for lamb some years and beef briskets and venison.\u00a0 Why not a big steak or a plate of Beef Wellington?<\/p>\n<p>So as to avoid the notion that this is some sort of elitist, culture-war, anti-turkey manifesto, I will point out that my family will be eating founding-father style out of our garden tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll fill the table (and ourselves) to the groaning point with squash, carrots, canned applesauce.<\/p>\n<p>And when the wild turkeys wander past in the field outside, we&#8217;ll tip our glasses in solidarity.\u00a0 Turkey libre!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s my Thanksgiving day confession:\u00a0 I&#8217;m so off turkey.\u00a0 I know, I know.\u00a0 Blasphemy.\u00a0 I [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[36],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3284"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3284"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3284\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3285,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3284\/revisions\/3285"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3284"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3284"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3284"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
