{"id":3362,"date":"2010-12-08T10:51:19","date_gmt":"2010-12-08T15:51:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3362"},"modified":"2010-12-08T12:02:27","modified_gmt":"2010-12-08T17:02:27","slug":"afternoon-read-a-call-to-close-prisons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/12\/08\/afternoon-read-a-call-to-close-prisons\/","title":{"rendered":"Afternoon Read: A call to close prisons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even as we speak, Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility is in the process of being mothballed.\u00a0 Camp Gabriels is in the news because that shuttered facility has failed to find a buyer.<\/p>\n<p>Last session, the North Country&#8217;s lawmakers &#8212; local and state &#8212; managed to block closure of two more regional prisons, in Moriah and Ogdensburg.<\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/opinion\/article\/Liberate-N-Y-from-its-prisons-864811.php\">Albany Times Union<\/a>, however, corrections activist Robert Gangi argues that a much more aggressive plan is needed to close more prisons fast.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>More ambitious plans to shut facilities have failed largely for  political reasons. Concerned about the loss of jobs, the correction  officers union and legislators from upstate areas where most of the  prisons are located have successfully blocked most closure proposals  made by the state&#8217;s past three governors:\u00a0\u00a0 George Pataki, Eliot Spiter, and David Paterson.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gangi argues that declining inmate populations signal the need for more cuts, and he seems to think that Andrew Cuomo will finally get the job done.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The week after his election, Andrew Cuomo toured Sing Sing prison and  spoke to the press afterward.
