{"id":3453,"date":"2010-12-28T02:18:55","date_gmt":"2010-12-28T07:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3453"},"modified":"2010-12-29T11:17:05","modified_gmt":"2010-12-29T16:17:05","slug":"morning-read-double-dipping-north-country-lawmakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2010\/12\/28\/morning-read-double-dipping-north-country-lawmakers\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  Double-dipping North Country lawmakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lohr McKinstry at the <a href=\"http:\/\/pressrepublican.com\/0100_news\/x2036086726\/Retired-public-officials-allowed-double-dip\">Plattsburgh Press-Republican has a provocative piece up<\/a> about two fiscally conservative North Country Republicans who are double-dipping &#8212; drawing state pension pay while also earning paychecks from the state of New York.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Many of their constituents would be surprised to learn that  Assemblywomen Teresa Sayward of Willsboro and Janet Duprey of Peru are  retiring from office Dec. 31.<\/p>\n<p>But on Jan. 1, they will be going back on the payroll.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At a time when thousands of state workers are being asked to absorb major sacrifices &#8212; from layoffs to pay freezes &#8212; the two Assemblywoman argue that they are due the payments, which McKinstry blames on &#8220;a loophole&#8221; in state law.<\/p>\n<p>Sayward, who will receive an additional $30,000 a year, according to the newspaper, said this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve worked hard. I&#8217;ll have to continue to work, just like anybody  among my constituents. Most people, when they retire, still have to  work.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Duprey told the newspaper, &#8220;I&#8217;ve worked very hard for those 35 years.
