{"id":3482,"date":"2011-01-04T15:32:30","date_gmt":"2011-01-04T20:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3482"},"modified":"2011-01-05T11:01:22","modified_gmt":"2011-01-05T16:01:22","slug":"scozzafava-to-head-cuomos-local-government-effort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/01\/04\/scozzafava-to-head-cuomos-local-government-effort\/","title":{"rendered":"Scozzafava to head Cuomo&#8217;s Local Government effort"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\">Governor Andrew Cuomo&#8217;s office announced Tuesday afternoon that former North Country Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava will serve as Deputy Secretary for Local Government in his Department of State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\">Scozzafava could find herself at the center of some of Albany&#8217;s biggest debates over the next year, as Gov. Cuomo has promised to push for the downsizing and consolidation of local governments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\">One of his top agenda items has been a 2% property tax cap for local governments and school districts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\">Scozzafava, a Republican, has been hugely popular in her Assembly district, but is also a controversial figure in North Country politics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\">She dropped out of a 2009 special election for the 23rd district House seat after facing stiff opposition from Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\">She later endorsed Democrat Bill Owens in that race and also endorsed Cuomo in his 2010 gubernatorial bid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\">Here is the governor&#8217;s announcement:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\">Dede Scozzafava will serve as Deputy Secretary for Local Government at the<br \/>\nDepartment of State. Ms. Scozzafava served as a member of the New York<br \/>\nState Assembly from 1999-2010, serving as Minority Leader, Pro Tempore<br \/>\nfrom April 2009-December 2009. She served as Chairwoman of the Assembly<br \/>\nRepublican Review Committee and the SAVE NY TASK FORCE. Prior to joining<br \/>\nthe Assembly, Ms. Scozzafava was Mayor of the Village of Gouverneur from<br \/>\n1994-1998. In the private sector, Ms. Scozzafava spent 20 years working<br \/>\nfor Tucker Anthony\/RBC Dain Rauscher as an investment advisor.
