{"id":3556,"date":"2011-01-13T06:44:59","date_gmt":"2011-01-13T11:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3556"},"modified":"2011-01-13T06:46:43","modified_gmt":"2011-01-13T11:46:43","slug":"morning-read-massive-raises-for-top-state-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/01\/13\/morning-read-massive-raises-for-top-state-police\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  Massive raises for top state police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/522396\/Cuomo--shocked--by-raises-for-28-top-NY-troopers--update-.html?nav=5047\">Associated Press is reporting <\/a>that despite the state&#8217;s dire economic straits and more than 900 recent state job cuts, New York&#8217;s State Police have granted $20,000 raises to 28 senior officials.<\/p>\n<p>The price tag:\u00a0 $560,000 a year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I was surprised and shocked,&#8221; [Gov. Andrew] Cuomo said, questioning raises at a time  when others faced layoffs. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to be reviewing it today.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The revelation came just days after Cuomo&#8217;s State of the State address, in which he attempted to rally New Yorkers to a new era of austerity and lean government.<\/p>\n<p>State officials point out that some senior State Police officers were earning less than their lower-ranked counterparts, a fact which prompted the pay hikes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a letter to the state Budget Division, Assistant Deputy Police  Superintendent Terence O&#8217;Mara said &#8220;the salary inequality&#8221; in the  paramilitary organization needed to be fixed to support the chain of  command.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This chain only remains functional with the ability of the  superintendent to appoint the most competent and experienced personnel  to his executive staff.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So what do you think?\u00a0 A first test for Gov.
