{"id":3559,"date":"2011-01-13T10:31:08","date_gmt":"2011-01-13T15:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3559"},"modified":"2011-01-13T10:31:08","modified_gmt":"2011-01-13T15:31:08","slug":"worries-over-ocean-acidification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/01\/13\/worries-over-ocean-acidification\/","title":{"rendered":"Worries over ocean acidification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I listened with interest &#8211; and guilt &#8211; to Martha Foley and Dr. Curt Stager&#8217;s discussion of ocean acidification on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/16984\/20110113\/natural-selections-ocean-co2\">Natural Selections this morning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Interest because this topic deserves far more attention.\u00a0 Guilt because this is so very scary that I have been avoiding it, ostrich-like, hoping fervently that the chemistry scenarios are wrong, and we are not staring into the face of total disaster.<\/p>\n<p>A Canadian journalist wrote a book on this subject that I&#8217;d like to recommend, while admitting I have yet to read it myself:<\/p>\n<p><em>Sea Sick: the Hidden Crisis in the Global Ocean<\/em> by Alanna Mitchell<br \/>\nPublished 2008 in Australia by Murdoch Books; in 2009 in Canada by McClelland &amp; Stewart, in the U.S. by University of Chicago Press and in the U.K. by Oneworld<\/p>\n<p>Reviews like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/arts\/books\/review-sea-sick-by-alanna-mitchell\/article7993\/page1\/\">this one<\/a> from Richard Ellis for the Globe and Mail made the case for the importance of the subject. <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sea Sick<\/em> came to my attention again when it was nominated for a 2010 Canadian science book award, which was won by Ottawa research scientist Dr. Ernie Small (interviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/16491\/20101013\/bringing-plants-to-people-dr-ernie-small\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Some soundbites or quotes really stand out. Naturally, I cannot find the article in question now!\u00a0 But this is the part I remember: when researcher Joanie Kleypas understood the likely impact of changes in ocean acidity, author Mitchell recounts that Kleypas &#8220;ran into the bathroom outside the committee room and threw up.&#8221;\u00a0 Because it really could mean marine Armageddon.
