Many of the 4-5,000 troops headed to Afghanistan from Fort Drum starting in January will be charged with protecting the southern entrance to the capital, Kabul.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/world\/2008-12-11-gates-afghanistan_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip\">More units<\/a> will follow.<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">  <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=98091845\">NPR reported on the brigade<\/a> last night, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/07\/world\/asia\/07troops.html?scp=49&amp;sq=afghanistan&amp;st=nyt\">the NYT last week<\/a>.  The 3rd BCT&#8217;s public affairs team says it&#8217;s swamped with requests for coverage.  This same brigade spent a year in Afghanistan in 2006-07.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s the 3rd BCT&#8217;s deployment ceremony at Fort Drum.  They roll up and stow the brigade flag (&#8220;furl&#8221; it?) in preparation to unfurl it next month in Afghanistan.
