{"id":3714,"date":"2011-02-07T07:09:27","date_gmt":"2011-02-07T12:09:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3714"},"modified":"2011-02-07T13:34:23","modified_gmt":"2011-02-07T18:34:23","slug":"morning-read-heavy-snow-crushes-barns-glens-falls-arena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/02\/07\/morning-read-heavy-snow-crushes-barns-glens-falls-arena\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning read:  Heavy snow crushes barns, Glens Falls arena"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last week has seen monumental amounts of snow dumping on the North Country.\u00a0 One tough side-effect is that buildings sometimes collapse under the weight.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, 25 cows were killed in Northumberland after <a href=\"http:\/\/poststar.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/article_b42be262-2eb5-5555-ba61-901110e70ee9.html\">a barn roof collapsed<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/poststar.com\/news\/local\/article_c2ff3c0c-3240-11e0-a792-001cc4c03286.html\">The Glens Falls Post-Star<\/a> is reporting that three more barns collapsed on another farm over the weekend in Greenwich, killing\u00a0 at least two cows.<\/p>\n<p>According to the newspaper, there were also barn collapses in Kingsbury and Granville.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=133523898\">The Associated Press<\/a> is reporting that the heavy snow winter is affecting farms across the Northeast, with at least 136 agricultural structures damaged in Connecticut alone.<\/p>\n<p>A similar collapse occurred earlier this month at a dairy farm in Canton, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20110206\/ADV01\/302069897\">Ogdensburg Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vpr.net\/news_detail\/89917\/\">VPR<\/a> is reporting that agriculture officials in Vermont are urging farmers to get out and shovel excess snow from their barns.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In older barns&#8230;it&#8217;s also common to find that support braces have been cut away to make extra room.\u00a0 He says that can add to a structure&#8217;s vulnerability &#8211; especially with all this snow.\u00a0 According to the Department of Agriculture, a roof can lose it structural integrity in about 30 days if not cleared.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And late Sunday, the dome of the Adirondack Sports Complex in Queenbury partially collapsed, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/poststar.com\/news\/local\/article_5d8bc188-3272-11e0-8ddb-001cc4c002e0.html#vmix_media_id=59113771\">Glens Falls Post Star<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Doug Miller, general manager of the complex, said build-up on the structure had prompted him to contact the dome manufacturer about options for snow removal. A representative with the firm was already scheduled to make a visit on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve had a pretty good amount of ice and snow build-up on top of the dome.
