{"id":3788,"date":"2011-02-18T10:14:23","date_gmt":"2011-02-18T15:14:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3788"},"modified":"2011-02-19T11:45:28","modified_gmt":"2011-02-19T16:45:28","slug":"ijc-still-hammering-out-water-levels-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/02\/18\/ijc-still-hammering-out-water-levels-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"IJC still hammering out water levels plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remember the water levels study?\u00a0 It was an historic effort to reframe the way water flows are managed on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds wonky.\u00a0 But the effects could be profound, affecting Thousand Islands boaters, endangered Lake Ontario wetlands, waterfront homeowners, shippers in Montreal, you name it.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/11637\/20080626\/river-residents-make-last-case-for-better-water-levels\">People packed public meetings to advocate for their side.\u00a0 People in the Thousand Islands even made T-shirts.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/story\/12023\/20080908\/ijc-reverses-course-on-water-levels-plan\">Here&#8217;s a good summary<\/a> of all the NCPR coverage for a refresher.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been almost three years since the International Joint Commission, the binational commission which controls the water flows, backed away from the study results and went back to the drawing board.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the IJC announced it&#8217;s been pecking away at a new plan.\u00a0 In a press release, the IJC said that new plan would push toward:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;a new regulation plan that moves toward more natural flows to provide environmental improvements, particularly for Lake Ontario wetlands, while continuing to protect other interests.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Basically, that&#8217;s very good news for people along the St. Lawrence River, because it&#8217;s also likely that plan would keep river levels higher in August and September when boaters want to keep their crafts in the water.<\/p>\n<p>The IJC also said it was trying to incorporate &#8220;adjustments for significant climatic changes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another meeting is scheduled for April in Quebec City.\u00a0 Still no word on when a new plan may be released.\u00a0 But the IJC does promise opportunity for public comment once that happens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember the water levels study?\u00a0 It was an historic effort to reframe the way water [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[884,5602,4819],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3788"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/11"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3788"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3788\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3789,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3788\/revisions\/3789"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3788"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3788"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3788"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
