{"id":3807,"date":"2011-02-23T05:43:46","date_gmt":"2011-02-23T10:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3807"},"modified":"2011-02-23T05:43:46","modified_gmt":"2011-02-23T10:43:46","slug":"morning-read-a-deadly-snowmobile-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/02\/23\/morning-read-a-deadly-snowmobile-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  A deadly snowmobile winter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There has already been a steady drumbeat of snowmobile fatalities this winter, and in this morning&#8217;s Watertown Daily Times, Steve Virkler gives a synopsis of the picture in Lewis County.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With the fourth snowmobile-related fatality of the winter Monday  afternoon, Lewis County is in the midst of its deadliest season on  record, and officials are urging caution in hopes of avoiding further  tragedies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Be cautious,&#8221; Lewis County Sheriff L. Michael Tabolt  said. &#8220;Watch your speed. Wear a helmet. Watch for your surroundings. And  use common sense, too.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uticaod.com\/topstories\/x678656005\/Teen-killed-in-Lewis-Co-snowmobile-crash\">Utica Observer-Dispatch<\/a> is reporting that a total of seven people have died on sleds in their area, which includes Lewis County.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Rochester-area teen became the seventh person in the region to be killed in a snowmobile accident this year.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel DeSanctis, 16, of Webster, was operating a snowmobile on the  Osceola-Michigan Mills trail at about 2:45 p.m. Monday when he lost  control of his sled and veered off the trail, according to Lewis County  sheriff\u2019s deputies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And just last weekend, a <a href=\"http:\/\/saratogian.com\/articles\/2011\/02\/22\/news\/doc4d629aba464eb534579451.txt\">Malta man named Boris Alvarez died in a crash in Washington County<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Police  reported that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, but the  investigation into the crash and a toxicology report are pending.
