{"id":3883,"date":"2011-03-09T07:17:23","date_gmt":"2011-03-09T12:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3883"},"modified":"2011-03-09T20:33:22","modified_gmt":"2011-03-10T01:33:22","slug":"morning-read-will-gas-prices-derail-economic-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/03\/09\/morning-read-will-gas-prices-derail-economic-recovery\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  Will high gas prices derail the economic recovery?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/523349\/Legislator-asks-Obama-to-help-with-gas-prices.html?nav=5008\">The Adirondack Daily Enterprise<\/a> is reporting that Franklin County legislator Paul Maroun is urging President Barack Obama to do something about rising oil and gas prices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In my rural upstate New York area, people cannot get to work, health  care facilities, places of worship or grocery stores without cars; there  is no mass transportation like the Subway in New York or the Metro in  Washington, D.C.,&#8221; Maroun wrote to the president in a letter earlier  this month.<\/p>\n<p>Maroun thinks the president should abolish the three-tiered octane system for gasoline, and have dealers sell one grade of gasoline, increasing the supply and lowering costs.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, NY Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is asking Mr. Obama to tap the nation&#8217;s strategic oil reserves.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/business\/article356790.ece\">This from the Buffalo News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur families are already struggling in this difficult economy, and the  last thing we need is rising gas prices,\u201d Gillibrand said in a  statement. \u201cReleasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is  critical to relieve this extra burden on our families here in New York  and across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/09\/business\/economy\/09gasoline.html?hp\">The New York Times<\/a> is reporting this morning that the recent spike in pump prices isn&#8217;t likely to derail the economic recovery &#8212; unless prices go significantly higher.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One big reason is that consumers and businesses have learned lessons  from the last oil shock. Many drivers, for example, have given up their  gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles.
