{"id":3938,"date":"2011-03-18T15:02:50","date_gmt":"2011-03-18T19:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=3938"},"modified":"2011-03-18T15:15:14","modified_gmt":"2011-03-18T19:15:14","slug":"canada-sends-jets-to-support-intervention-in-lybia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/03\/18\/canada-sends-jets-to-support-intervention-in-lybia\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada sends jets to support intervention in Libya"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/story\/2011\/03\/18\/pol-harper-libya.html\">CBC<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-12781682\">BBC <\/a>report Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced Canada will help enforce a no-fly zone in Libya.Three CF-18 fighter jets have already left CFB Bagotville in Quebec, three more are slated to join them shortly.<\/p>\n<p>Canada is among a number of nations that have imposed sanctions against the current regime, and called for Moammar Gadhafi to step down. Harper stated his reasoning as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One either believes in freedom or one just says one believes in freedom. The Libyan people have shown by their sacrifice that they believe in it. Assisting them is a moral obligation upon those of us who profess to believe in this great ideal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As head of a minority government, Harper sought and received support for this action from leadership of the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois.
