{"id":4195,"date":"2011-05-04T07:31:15","date_gmt":"2011-05-04T11:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=4195"},"modified":"2011-06-01T09:07:44","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T13:07:44","slug":"sandbagged-by-big-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/05\/04\/sandbagged-by-big-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Sandbagged by big government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, two big events happened in the North Country.\u00a0 The first was the tax-filing deadline in mid-April, a time of fear and loathing for many people.<\/p>\n<p>The mantra these days is hard-wired into the American psyche, part of our live-free-or-die-DNA:\u00a0 This is our money and the government has no place making our wallets any lighter.<\/p>\n<p>But the second big event was a deluge of rain and snow water that began April 26th.<\/p>\n<p>A week later, it&#8217;s still raining and those tax dollars we throw in the kitty have materialized in the form of sandbags, dam and bridge inspectors, and road reconstruction crews.<\/p>\n<p>When I cover stories like this, I&#8217;m constantly struck by the break in how we view the government and our relationship to it.<\/p>\n<p>We grumble, we tell pollsters we think the whole affair is too costly and too wasteful.\u00a0 But when storm comes we expect government to be there.<\/p>\n<p>They say there are no atheists in foxholes?\u00a0 Well, there are no libertarians in a crisis.<\/p>\n<p>This schizophrenic attitude extends to the highest levels of politics and to all parties.<\/p>\n<p>When he was in Moriah last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, promised that aid would continue to flow to the region.\u00a0 But when asked how it would be paid for, he didn&#8217;t have an answer.<\/p>\n<p>But the simple reality is that every fire truck pumping basements this week and every backhoe shoring up road embankments is paid for either by taxes or borrowed money.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really that simple.<\/p>\n<p>And as we begin the massive reconstruction efforts, even more cash will have to come out of someone&#8217;s pocket.<\/p>\n<p>The time is long overdue when we should begin to think and talk more honestly about how to pick up the tab for the government services we need and demand.<\/p>\n<p>As always, your thoughts welcome.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, two big events happened in the North Country.\u00a0 The first was the tax-filing [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[5685,20],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4195"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4195"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4195\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":4197,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4195\/revisions\/4197"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4195"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4195"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4195"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
