{"id":4508,"date":"2011-07-22T08:19:22","date_gmt":"2011-07-22T12:19:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=4508"},"modified":"2011-07-22T08:20:34","modified_gmt":"2011-07-22T12:20:34","slug":"climate-change-threatens-to-spoil-ontario%e2%80%99s-signature-wines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/07\/22\/climate-change-threatens-to-spoil-ontario%e2%80%99s-signature-wines\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate change threatens to spoil Ontario\u2019s signature wines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Winemakers in Ontario say they are fighting to protect their grapes against the heat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/report-on-business\/small-business\/climate-change-threatens-to-spoil-ontarios-signature-wines\/article2105661\/\">The Globe and Mail newspaper reports<\/a> hotter summers can cause heat stress for grapes, which can threaten signature Ontario whites such as chardonnay and riesling.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper says warmer temperatures are also being blamed for the proliferation of foreign pests in Ontario vineyards, which is pushing up costs for grape growers.\u00a0 And that could mean a higher price per bottle.<\/p>\n<p>The Globe and Mail says Ontario had 575 million dollars in wine sales in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, some experts are predicting that warmer weather could actually help production in new parts of the province \u2013 where it hasn\u2019t been warm enough in the past to grow grapes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Winemakers in Ontario say they are fighting to protect their grapes against the heat.
