{"id":4578,"date":"2011-08-08T05:43:08","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T09:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=4578"},"modified":"2011-08-08T05:43:08","modified_gmt":"2011-08-08T09:43:08","slug":"morning-read-what-happens-if-a-north-country-dam-fails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/08\/08\/morning-read-what-happens-if-a-north-country-dam-fails\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning read:  What happens if a North Country dam fails?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/poststar.com\/news\/local\/spring-floods-raise-dec-concern-over-dam-failure-preparedness\/article_92cc5178-c089-11e0-8cb0-001cc4c002e0.html\">Glens Falls Post Star reports<\/a> this morning on a new effort by New York state to identify risks &#8212; and detail contingency plans &#8212; in case one of the state&#8217;s dams fail.<\/p>\n<p>According to Jon Alexander&#8217;s report, more than 720 dams are now listed as carrying a &#8220;moderate risk&#8221; statewide.\u00a0 By August 19, dam operators have to come up with basic information about what happens in the case of failure.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After a rash of floods raised alarms of potential dam failures throughout the region this spring &#8211; including Conklingville Dam in Saratoga County and Abanakee Lake in Hamilton County &#8211; the rule change is hitting close to home with local officials.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The challenge when there&#8217;s a breach is knowing where the water&#8217;s going to go,&#8221; said Amy Drexel, Warren County&#8217;s deputy director of emergency services, of preparing for a dam failure.<\/p>\n<p>Towns and counties across New York state have set their engineers on drafting the thousands of new plans required.<\/p>\n<p>But locally, officials say the response from private dam owners hasn&#8217;t been as enthusiastic.
