{"id":4586,"date":"2011-08-09T07:32:49","date_gmt":"2011-08-09T11:32:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=4586"},"modified":"2011-08-09T15:06:06","modified_gmt":"2011-08-09T19:06:06","slug":"morning-read-north-country-4-wheeler-trails-growing-controversial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/08\/09\/morning-read-north-country-4-wheeler-trails-growing-controversial\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read: North Country 4-wheeler trails growing, controversial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A lot of motorized sport fans in the North Country see 4-wheeled ATVs as the next big thing.\u00a0 The machines can be ridden more of the year &#8212; snowmobilers spend a lot of each winter looking glumly at slushy trails.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people love ATVs.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/525523\/ATV-trail-possible--popular.html\">Adirondack Daily Enterprise<\/a> reported that Franklin County is considering moving forward with an intergrated system for four wheelers that would link to routes in St. Lawrence and Clinton Counties.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Neil Seymour, Franklin County Tourism director and head of the  committee, told the board his committee wrapped up their work by  conducting a survey, mostly of ATV users, about a potential trail  network to assess interest in it.<\/p>\n<p>Out of 920 responses, 82  percent from ATV owners, 98 percent said they want to see an ATV trail  system in Franklin County, which Seymour called &#8220;pretty overwhelming.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The SNIRT event this spring in Lewis County and the Tug Hill drew 3,000 riders, according to the Watertown Daily Times.<\/p>\n<p>But the sport also has its critics and its detractors, including environmental groups who say that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/04\/13\/morning-read-atv-4-wheeler-snirt-rally-in-tug-hill-lewis-county-daws-fire\/\">riders do a lot of damage to forests and wetlands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Already, ATVs have been banned from most state-owned roads in the Adirondack forest preserve.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20110809\/NEWS04\/708099913\">And the WDT is reporting this morning<\/a> that a pair of anti-4-wheeler activists in Lewis County are suing to close roads there.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Janette M. Peek, Watson, and Gerald A.
