{"id":4672,"date":"2011-08-28T07:53:16","date_gmt":"2011-08-28T11:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=4672"},"modified":"2011-08-28T07:57:28","modified_gmt":"2011-08-28T11:57:28","slug":"sunday-opinion-energy-town-hall-meetings-and-welcome-back-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/08\/28\/sunday-opinion-energy-town-hall-meetings-and-welcome-back-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Opinion:  Energy, town hall meetings and Welcome back students!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Morning, folks.\u00a0 You&#8217;re either completely distracted by Hurricane Irene, or you&#8217;re trapped inside eager for the diversion of the weekend opinion pages.\u00a0 So let&#8217;s have at it.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/poststar.com\/news\/opinion\/editorial\/editorial-energy-policy-is-in-state-of-confusion\/article_7bb3953c-d0dd-11e0-bee3-001cc4c03286.html\">Glens Falls Post Star<\/a> decries the lack of a coherent, logical national energy policy, pointing to the starkly diverging views of Rep. Chris Gibson and environmentalist Bill McKibben, and to the fierce disputs over development of New York&#8217;s Marcellus Shale gas deposits.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With all this uncertainty and disagreement over fuel estimates, sources and priorities, it&#8217;s no wonder we&#8217;re still captive to the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Better science and more effective leadership are the only way we&#8217;re going to claw out of our energy quagmire. Until we get both, we&#8217;ll just keep twisting in the wind.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/526277\/Fracking-leaves-a-bad-taste-in-our-mouth.html?nav=5003\">Adirondack Daily Enterprise<\/a>, meanwhile, chimes in that &#8220;hydrofracking&#8221; in the Marchellus Shale &#8220;leaves a bad taste in our mouth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The New York Times reviewed documents and reported in a series that the  wastewater that comes back to the surface can be highly radioactive and  inadequately treated and was then discharged back into rivers that  supply drinking water. These downstream water supplies have not been  required to test water sources for radioactivity, despite the known  health threats and federal regulations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20110828\/OPINION01\/708289989\/-1\/opinion\">Watertown Daily Times<\/a> notes that Congress is more unpopular than ever &#8212; with approval ratings around 13% &#8212; and that means lawmakers are holding fewer town hall meetings.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Members of Congress are seeking more controlled environments where  they may talk and listen to constituents. Wide-open public meetings that  can erupt into face-to-face confrontations are out for now.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said recently that he knows people want to \u201cexpress frustration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy  the way, 10 percent of the American people, I understand, approve of  the Congress.
