{"id":4826,"date":"2011-09-20T07:03:16","date_gmt":"2011-09-20T11:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=4826"},"modified":"2011-09-20T10:19:55","modified_gmt":"2011-09-20T14:19:55","slug":"morning-read-looking-the-other-way-on-illegal-immigration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/09\/20\/morning-read-looking-the-other-way-on-illegal-immigration\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  Looking the other way on illegal immigration?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin is taking heat from Republicans for saying point-blank that his administration has a sort of don&#8217;t-ask-don&#8217;t-tell policy when it comes to illegal migrant workers.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burlingtonfreepress.com\/article\/20110920\/NEWS03\/110920014\/Vermont-GOP-criticizes-Gov-Peter-Shumlin-over-migrant-worker-statement\">This from the Burlington Free Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We kind of look the other way as much as we can. I just want to make  sure that is what we are doing. That has clearly been our policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He  went on to explain that Vermont agriculture depends on migrant labor.  \u201cThere is just no doubt about it, we need foreign workers,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the newspaper, Vermont&#8217;s GOP doesn&#8217;t like that philosophy much, calling it &#8220;completely irresponsible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot of evidence that a similar policy shapes the policing (or lack thereof) of migrant workers in northern New York.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that we&#8217;re within shouting distance of a massive US Border Patrol presence, a lot of undocumented workers play a vital role in the Norh Country&#8217;s dairy industry.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you think?\u00a0 Is this is a good way to run an industry, using grey- or black-market labor?\u00a0 If not, what should be done about it?
