{"id":4952,"date":"2011-10-16T08:14:51","date_gmt":"2011-10-16T12:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=4952"},"modified":"2011-10-17T09:48:20","modified_gmt":"2011-10-17T13:48:20","slug":"sunday-opinion-school-turmoil-filming-cops-and-saving-thurman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/10\/16\/sunday-opinion-school-turmoil-filming-cops-and-saving-thurman\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Opinion:  School turmoil, filming cops and saving Thurman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Morning folks.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the final pre-fundraiser edition of Sunday Opinion.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t forget that tomorrow is the big day.\u00a0 Call early and call often.\u00a0 Now to the good stuff.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/pressrepublican.com\/0201_editorials\/x1621540291\/Peru-residents-genuinely-skeptical\">Plattsburgh Press-Republican<\/a> opines about the sudden departure of Peru&#8217;s new school superintendent, who was hired, worked a few weeks, went on leave, then resigned.\u00a0 He was paid an undisclosed severance as he went out the door.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So apprehension of district taxpayers is not without merit and concern.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve been fleeced before.\u00a0 Just who are the elected School Board members representing?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.timesunion.com\/opinion\/new-yorks-teaching-moment\/15382\/\">the Albany Times-Union<\/a> is chiding Governor Andrew Cuomo for not listening to school leaders around the state who say that deep cuts in education aid are affecting classroom quality.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>How about a reality, too, where the governor\u2019s office works more         collaboratively with school officials, rather than so glibly  dismissing        the concerns that they so plainly spell out?<\/p>\n<p>How about collectively assessing the longer-term effects of laying  off        some 7,000 teachers in New York, almost 4 percent of the  statewide        total? Is that too severe a cut, as the superintendents  so strongly        suggest?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watertowndailytimes.com\/article\/20111016\/OPINION01\/710169967\/-1\/opinion\">Watertown Daily Times<\/a> weighs in on lawsuits around the country where police departments and other public officials are trying to limit the ability of citizens to photograph or videotape police officers who are doing their duty.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is about videotaping police in a public place.
