Mercury  is one of the nearly 200 toxic substances singled out in the bipartisan  effort to toughen the Clean Air Act two decades ago, and the EPA still  struggles to limit it.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>Harris started working on the project as part of her work at Middlebury College.  The piece is a fascinating exploration of how communities deal with industries that provide jobs and put health at risk.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>&#8220;We&#8217;re not really tree-hugging liberals,&#8221; said [Selene] Hummer. &#8220;But when your  environment becomes damaged or you feel that you&#8217;re being  contaminated\u2014I don&#8217;t care what party you&#8217;re in\u2014this is your human life.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/health_and_science\/green_room\/2011\/11\/cement_plant_pollution_leads_to_a_fight_in_chanute_kansas.html\">Read the full article here<\/a>.
