{"id":5082,"date":"2011-11-17T01:58:10","date_gmt":"2011-11-17T06:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/?p=5082"},"modified":"2011-11-22T09:43:01","modified_gmt":"2011-11-22T14:43:01","slug":"morning-read-ny-wont-replace-famous-duck-hole-dam-in-adirondacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/2011\/11\/17\/morning-read-ny-wont-replace-famous-duck-hole-dam-in-adirondacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Read:  NY won&#8217;t replace famous Duck Hole dam in Adirondacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of tropical storm Irene&#8217;s biggest body blows was to trails and infrastructure in the High Peaks backcountry.\u00a0 The storm blew out dams at Marcy Dam and Duck Hole.<\/p>\n<p>No decision has been made yet about replacing the Marcy Dam structure, but DEC officials told the <a href=\"http:\/\/adirondackexplorer.org\/out-takes\/2011\/11\/16\/dec-wont-rebuild-duck-hole-dam\/\">Adirondack Explorer<\/a> on Wednesday that Duck Hole won&#8217;t be replaced.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adirondackexplorer.org\/out-takes\/2011\/11\/16\/dec-wont-rebuild-duck-hole-dam\/\">This from Phil Brown&#8217;s Explorer blog<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>DEC spokeswoman Lisa King said today that the department has no plans to repair the dam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt\u00a0this time, DEC does not anticipate the repair or replacement of  the Duck Hole dam in the High Peaks Wilderness Area,\u201d she told the <em>Explorer <\/em>in  an e-mail. \u201cBy leaving it as is, the affected backcountry in this area  can return to a more natural state.\u00a0This is in keeping with DEC\u2019s  responsibilities for care, custody and control of Forest Preserve lands  under the state constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The department\u2019s guidelines for dams in the Forest Preserve favor  removing dams in Wilderness Areas \u201cwhen they become unsafe or are  otherwise in need of replacement, reconstruction and\/or rehabilitation.\u201d  Nonetheless, such dams may be rehabilitated to preserve fish and  wildlife habitat, protect scenic vistas, or maintain a waterway\u2019s  navigability, among other purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesmen for the environmental groups Adirondack Council and Adirondack Wild said they opposed rebuilding the dam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s deep in the wilderness,\u201d remarked David Gibson of Adirondack  Wild. \u201cIt\u2019s just as much a wilderness experience after Irene as it was  before Irene.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So what do you think?\u00a0 A good think to leave the spot in its wild state, as shaped by Irene?\u00a0 Or is the loss of an iconic backcountry pond unacceptable?<\/p>\n<p>Comments welcome.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of tropical storm Irene&#8217;s biggest body blows was to trails and infrastructure in the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[22,6523,48],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5082"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5082"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5082\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5082"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5082"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.northcountrypublicradio.org\/inbox\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5082"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
